Grow at Betteshanger

Are you aged 16 – 19? Not currently in education, employment or training? Looking to grow your career prospects?

Why not sign up for our 10 week ‘Grow at Betteshanger’ programme?  You’ll join our passionate team learning practical outdoor skills such as land management, cycle servicing and archery.

What is ‘Grow at Betteshanger’?

We recognise that traditional classroom learning doesn’t suit everyone.

Our 250-acres at Betteshanger provide a wonderful natural environment to enable people of all ages to spend time in the great outdoors and learn new skills through hands-on, practical experience.

‘Grow at Betteshanger’ is a unique project that combines outdoor learning and fun activities to help learn new skills around physical, personal, social, emotional and knowledge development.

We are looking to engage young people aged 16-24 years who are not currently in education, employment to enrol on the programme. You would be required to commit to attending on a Tuesday and Wednesday every week, for 10 weeks.

Why should I enrol?

Outdoor learning at Betteshanger is active, challenging and exhilarating. During the 10 week programme you will participate in a number of fun outdoor activities and maintenance jobs across the Park.

You will gain valuable work experience and naturally develop your personal skills.

We will support you to achieve a City & Guilds qualification and we will continue assist you beyond the programme to help you secure future training or employment to match your skill set and area of interest.

 Activities you’ll try:

  • Cycling
  • Archery
  • Orienteering
  • Geocaching
  • My/PT (Military Style Fitness)

As well as the activities we offer, we have an ongoing maintenance programme to keep the park in good shape, daily jobs include cutting back the trees and bushes on the bike trails, planting, wildlife monitoring,  ensuring signage is in good order and various safety checks across the park.

Practical skills you’ll develop:

  • Cycle maintenance
  • Path & trail maintenance
  • Customer services

You will gain valuable experience and evidence that will help you work towards a City & Guilds Level 1 in Employability Skills.

Typical units that you will cover include:

  • Work-based experience
  • Career planning & making applications
  • Working as part of a team
  • Preparing for work
  • Community Project
  • Introduction to H&S in the workplace
  • Dealing with problems
  • Environmental awareness

You will need to commit to attending on a Tuesday and Wednesday every week for the 10 weeks (transport and lunch can be provided).

The Grow at Betteshanger project is kindly funded by the Port of Dover Community Fund and supported by the Kent Community Foundation.
