Aylesham Heritage Centre

Aylesham Heritage Centre is open to the public every Wednesday between 10am and 2pm.  It is a well-used community resource, run wholly by volunteers, mostly ex-miners and people who have a mining connection in their family. The centre tells the story of the village since its green field birth in 1927 and of the colliery it was built to serve, Snowdown.

The collections on display include:

  • original archive material ranging from pension records, an asset survey, social and sporting club records, Nacods and local Labour party minute books.
  • sports/social club memorabilia- e.g. pigeon club, darts, skittles, pool, from Snowdown Colliery long service certificates
  • mining material, e.g. lamps, snap tins, checks, self-rescuers, battery packs, explosive (dummies), cables, piece of coal (‘last piece from Snowdown’), winding rope, badges, canary revival cage
  • uniform, e.g. helmet, knee pads, overalls, NCB jacket

There are extensive collections of images (many digitised), ephemera and cuttings.

Elvington and Eythorne Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre is located in an upstairs room of Elvington Community Centre and opens on Tuesdays between 10am and 2pm. The centre concentrates on Tilmanstone Colliery and the villages that surrounded it; Elvington, Eythorne and Waldershire.

Displays include:

  • A section of battery charging rack, a helmet, overalls and pair of boots worn at Tilmanstone, a magneto mining phone, safety headlamps, a piece of Tilmanstone coal, pit head bath towel and soap, badminton team badges and a selection of colliery plans and ephemera
  • Some original Eythorne Parish Council Records and original photographs
  • Kent specific 1980s strike posters and badges and a collection of St John’s mines rescue/first aid material
  • Hammil Brickworks and Guildford Colliery
  • A collection of wider local history reference material.

Like Aylesham, it is wholly run by volunteers and is a thriving centre for the ex-mining community.
